History

The Cape Peninsula's history is rich and varied, reflecting South Africa's diverse cultural heritage. Originally inhabited by the Khoisan people, the area was first sighted by Portuguese explorers in the late 15th century, with Bartolomeu Dias naming it the "Cape of Storms." Later renamed the "Cape of Good Hope" by King John II of Portugal, it became a crucial stop for European ships traveling to the East Indies. In the 17th century, the Dutch East India Company established a supply station at the Cape, leading to the founding of Cape Town. The region played a significant role in maritime history and the colonial expansion of South Africa, with its strategic importance continuing through British control in the 19th century. Today, the Cape Peninsula is renowned for its stunning landscapes, rich biodiversity, and historical landmarks, offering a glimpse into its storied past.
