History

Kibale National Park, established in 1993, was originally designated as a forest reserve in 1932 to protect its valuable timber resources. Over time, its conservation focus shifted towards safeguarding its rich biodiversity, particularly its diverse primate species. The park's creation was driven by the need to preserve habitats crucial for chimpanzees, Uganda's largest population of which resides here. Scientific research into primate behavior and ecology has been a cornerstone of Kibale's history, contributing significantly to our understanding of these species. Today, Kibale National Park remains a vital conservation area and a renowned destination for primate tracking, wildlife viewing, and ecological research.
