History

Mombasa, located on Kenya's coast, has a rich history dating back over a millennium. Initially settled by indigenous communities, it became a significant trading hub for Arab merchants by the 9th century, trading in ivory, spices, and slaves. From the 15th century, it attracted Portuguese, Turkish, and Omani interests, each leaving their cultural and architectural imprint. The Portuguese constructed Fort Jesus in 1593 to protect their trade routes, later ceding control to the Sultanate of Oman in the 18th century. Mombasa continued to thrive under British colonial rule, serving as East Africa's main port. Today, it remains a vibrant city blending ancient heritage with modern vitality.
